“Jo Khele, WohKhile” (The person who plays, shines), is the mantra of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Sri Narendra Modi. It means Sports and games impart a sense of discipline, fellow-feeling and togetherness. They teach the value of time. Sports and games have to be an essential part of an individual’s life. All round development of an individual’s personality is incomplete without sports.
Central Coalfields Limited (one of the fastest growing subsidiaries of Coal India Limited) on behalf of Coal India Sports Promotion Association organised the prestigious All India Public Sector Football Tournament from 12th to 18th April’16 at its Barka-Sayal Area in Ramgarh District. Teams from all across the country participated in the said tournament. Relentless efforts and constant communication with members of All India Public Sector Sports Control Board led to an escalation in the number of participating teams from 10 to 13 as compared to last year. The following teams participated and graced the event.
13 teams participated, which are Food Corporation of India (FCI), ONGC, Air India, Garden Reach Shipbuilder &Engg Limited, J&K Bank, Coal India Limited, Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF), Reserve Bank of India (RBI), BSNL, Oil India, Employees State Insurance Corporation, State Bank of Travancore .
The Team Manager’s Meeting was organised in the evening of 11th April. The Match Commissioner nominated by Jharkhand Football Association explained the rules and regulations to be followed in the tournament. The teams were divided into 4 groups by draw of lots keeping the winners, runners and semi-finalist of last year in different groups. It was decided that top teams of each group would qualify for the semi-finals.
Sri Gopal Singh, Chairman-Cum-Managing Director, CCL was the Chief Guest of the Inaugural Day Function. He was overwhelmed inaugurating this mega event of PSUs, especially seeing the enthusiastic participation by teams from all over the country. In his address CMD, CCL heartily welcomed all the participants and emphasised the role of sports in development of a good society. CMD highlighted sportsman spirit as the most vital outcome of sports that not only helps an individual on the field but also in other aspects of life.
He appreciated the role of All India Public Sector Sports Control Board in organising different sports events amongst member PSUs. He said that it brings unity amongst us, as teams from all corners of the country participates in it. CMD also enlightened the participating teams about the new initiative taken up by CCL for opening of 15Sports Academy and a Sports University at Khelgaon ( Mega Sports Complex), Ranchi in collaboration with the Government of Jharkhand. He requested all individuals to spread this news as far as possible so that more and more deserving candidates can turn up for enrolment in the Academy. CMD, CCL was of the view that sports bring unity, discipline and a sense of responsibility and said that it also teaches us the importance of team work in achieving a common goal which in turn helps the organisation and it also plays a very important role in growth of the nation.
All the teams were thrilled to listen to CMD,CCL. One of them Sri Francis of RCF said, “We are very much honoured as CMD Sir came down to the ground and met all of us. The initiative taken by CCL for Sports Academy is laudable.”
CCL decided to organise this prestigious tournament at one of its operating Areas to give the nearby villagers and youths a chance to see the top footballers of the nation in action and in helping them learn the finer skills of the game. The youths were delighted to watch Md. Rafique, current Indian player, in action.
This tournament is bound to be a source of encouragement for buddingfootballers in choosing the game as an alternative career.
The inaugural match was played between J&K Bank and Reserve Bank of India in which J&K Bank defeated RBI by 2-1. Sri Majid of J&K Bank was adjudged Man of the Match for his brilliant show on the field. Altogether 15 matches were played in league stage of the tournament. Man of the Match award was given in all the matches of the tournament.
After the league stage the following teams qualified for the Semi Finals by topping their group.
1. ONGC 2. Air India 3. State Bank of Travancore 4. FCIThe Final, Semi-final and matches of last day of league stage were played in the Floodlights. The first Semi-final match was played between ONGC and Air India in which ONGC defeated Air India by 4-2 in the tie breaker after the scheduled time ended in a 2-2 draw. Bilfing Nursary of ONGC was adjudged Man of the Match.
In the second semi-final, Food Corporation of India defeated State Bank of Travancore by 2-0. Monu Choudhary of FCI received the Man of the Match award for his outstanding performance.
The Final Match was played on 18th April between FCI and ONGC. Director (Personnel),CCL Sri R.S.Mahapatro was the Chief Guest of the final day function. Sri Sanjeev Kumar,General Manager(Welfare), CIL was also present. It was a well contested match. The first blood was drawn by FCI in the first half through Rakesh Kumar. ONGC team kept on building the pressure and finally got the equaliser in the second half with a brilliant goal by Jatin Bisht. The Match got extended to extra time but did not get the result and it went into tie breaker. FCI team held their nerves and luck favoured them in winning the tie-breaker by 5 goals to 4. They became the unbeaten champion and lifted the prestigious Trophy presented by the Chief Guest. DhananjayAdhikari, the Goalkeeper of FCI, was declared Man of the Match.
The Chief Guest of the function congratulated both the teams and assured that in future also CCL would come forward in organising important tournaments of All India Public Sector Sports Promotion Board which gives the deserving players a chance to perform at a very competitive level. He also told that CCL will always promote sports amongst the youths specially of the rural areas.
The special prizes of the tournament were awarded to the following players by the Chief Guest.

STATE BANK OF TRAVANCORE Total 72 number of goals were scored in the tournament out of which 61 were scored by the winning side. 2 matches ended in a draw. One of the semi-finals and the finals went into tie breaker.
The tournament could not have been organised in such significant manner without unstinting support from Coal India Sports Promotion Association. Sri Ramesh Sachdeva, Advisor, All India Public Sector Sports Control Board played a vital role in providing all the information and contact details of member PSUs which consequently facilitated in increasing the number of participating teams.
Here CCL would like to acknowledge the significant contribution of Sri Ashish Bose, Jt Secy, Chotanagpur Athletic Association in providing the technical support for preparation of the venue. The participating teams were very discipline and played a strategic role in organising the matches and they deserve a special appreciation. CCL is also grateful to Jharkhand Football Association for providing qualified Referees and Match officials for the tournament.
CCL is immensely proud of the members of the Organising Committee and all its employees who rose to the occasion to make this mega event a memorable one.
